Starting as far back as 2500 B.C rice had been a source of food over a longer period of time than any other crop. Rice production goes back 4,000 years in China and the surrounding areas, it then spread to countries like Sri Lanka and India. It is believed that rice was passed on to Greece and areas of the Mediterranean, Southern Europe and to some of North Africa. Rice was then brought to the New World from Europe, to Brazil from Portugal and from Spain to South and Central America.
