Complete A–Z List of Natural Herbal Remedies and Their Health Benefits

Latin American Home Remedies

Para español, haz clic aquí

Throughout generations, the peoples of Latin America have passed down a rich tradition of home remedies, based on plants, herbs, and family customs. These remedies were born from observation, experience, and traditional knowledge, used to relieve everyday ailments, improve well-being, and maintain health in the home.

Many of these remedies were discovered out of necessity, combining indigenous knowledge with European and African influences, giving rise to a natural medicine that today forms part of Latin American cultural heritage.

Interesting Cultural Note About “Merolicos”

A merolico, or street vendor of medicinal home remedies, dates back to the late 19th century, when a Mexican Jew of Polish origin named Rafael Meraulyock promoted his skills in the streets of Mexico City—pulling teeth and selling his “miracle” natural medicines. People had difficulty pronouncing his last name and began calling him “Merolico,” a name now used for street vendors selling natural remedies. The term is also associated with “charlatan,” referring to someone who talks excessively or deceives others.
