In 1910, West Virginia issued the first official proclamation, and by 1911 the celebration had spread across the United States.

Father’s Day in the United States is credited to Sonora Smart Dodd of Washington, who proposed the idea in 1909 to honor her father, Henry Jackson Smart. He was a Civil War veteran who raised six children after the death of his wife.
The first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910, in Spokane, Washington. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge supported the holiday, and in 1966, President Lyndon Johnson declared the third Sunday of June as Father’s Day.
