La Mexicana Basalt Stone Molcajete with Pig Head

Bring authentic Mexican tradition to your kitchen with this handcrafted 7-inch basalt stone molcajete with pig head by La Mexicana. Perfect for preparing fresh salsas, guacamole, and grinding spices the traditional way.

A molcajete is the traditional Mexican version of the mortar and pestle, used for centuries in authentic Mexican cooking. The word molcajete comes from the Nahuatl term molcaxitl, reflecting its deep indigenous roots.

Carved from natural volcanic basalt stone, this molcajete features the classic three-legged design and a decorative pig head along the rim — a unique artisan detail that adds character and tradition to your kitchen. Each piece is handcrafted, making every molcajete one of a kind.

The matching grinding stone, known as a tejolote (from the Nahuatl texolotl), is made from the same durable basalt material for authentic grinding performance.

Dimensions:

  • Bowl Diameter: 7 inches
  • Total Length (including pig head): 10 inches
  • Height: 5 inches

Note: The decorative pig head extends the total length but does not affect the bowl capacity.

Why choose a basalt molcajete:

  • Naturally rough surface for superior grinding
  • Enhances flavor by releasing natural oils from ingredients
  • Creates authentic texture for salsas and guacamole
  • Durable, long-lasting volcanic stone
  • Seasons over time for improved flavor

Because basalt stone is naturally porous, your molcajete will gradually “season” with use — similar to cast iron — enhancing the flavor of your recipes over time.

Molcajetes can also be heated and used as a rustic serving dish for warm recipes like queso fundido or salsa molcajeteada.

Perfect for:

  • Fresh homemade salsas
  • Guacamole
  • Grinding spices and dried chiles
  • Traditional Mexican recipes
  • Serving and presentation

Each molcajete is handcrafted from natural basalt stone; slight variations in size, color, and texture are normal and part of its authentic charm.
