How to Season a New Clay Water Jug (Jarra de Barro)

What you need:
Clay jug (and lid), large bucket, clean water, non-abrasive scrubber, optional: vinegar, baking soda, or rice water.

Steps:

• Clean: Rinse inside and out with water using a non-abrasive scrubber. Don’t use soap.
• Soak: Submerge in water 12–24 hours to strengthen and seal pores.
• Rinse Again: Scrub gently under running water; add baking soda or salt if needed.
• Fill & Rest: Fill with fresh water, let sit a few hours, then empty. Some leakage is normal.
• Dry: Wipe with a cloth and air-dry in a ventilated spot.

Tips:

• Never use soap—just water and a scrubber.
• Avoid sudden temperature changes to prevent cracks.
• Clean regularly and store in a ventilated place.
• White residue is normal mineral buildup—wipe with a dry cloth.
