OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE HISTORY

In December 1531, on the hill of Tepeyac (just northwest of Mexico City), a humble Indigenous man named Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin encountered a luminous figure who identified herself as the Mother of the True God and the Mother of all humanity.

She asked Juan Diego to inform the bishop that a chapel should be built on that sacred site, and as a sign, she caused her image to be miraculously imprinted on his tilma—a simple cactus‑cloth garment that by every natural account should have deteriorated within decades but remains preserved centuries later.

According to the native‑language narrative known as the Nican Mopohua, she appeared on four occasions between December 9 and December 12, and her message was one of love, compassion, help and protection for all people.

Among the extraordinary details: despite the tilma’s humble material, the image remains vivid nearly 500 years later and continues to resist full scientific explanation.

The site of the apparitions eventually became the location of one of the world’s most‑visited Marian shrines, the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City.

Her Feast Day is celebrated each year on December 12, and she is venerated as patroness of Mexico and the Americas.
