The Story of the Apparition of Our Lady of Guadalupe

In December 1531, the Virgin Mary appeared to Juan Diego on Tepeyac Hill in Mexico City, asking that a church be built in her honor. When Juan Diego shared her message with Bishop Fray Juan de Zumárraga, the bishop was skeptical and requested a sign as proof of the apparition.

On December 12, 1531, the Virgin instructed Juan Diego to gather flowers from the hillside. Although it was winter, he miraculously found Castilian roses blooming on the frozen hill. He gathered the roses in his cloak, known as a tilma, and brought them to the bishop.

When Juan Diego opened his tilma, the roses fell to the floor and a miraculous image of Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared on the fabric. Amazed by the sign, the bishop believed Juan Diego’s message and ordered a chapel to be built at Tepeyac.

This moment marked the beginning of the devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe, one of the most important religious symbols in Mexico and Latin America.

Today, the Basílica de Santa María de Guadalupe, often called “La Villa,” stands at the foot of Tepeyac Hill in northern Mexico City. It is one of the most visited Catholic shrines in the world, welcoming millions of pilgrims and visitors each year.
