Corn Silk by El Guapo are the long, shiny, silky threads or elongated stigmas at the top of an ear of corn. Maize Silk, Indian Corn, Stigma Maydis, Zea mays and Maidis Stigma are other names by which Corn Silk is also known. Although it’s not considered as food, Corn silk is used as a medicine because they contain significant amounts of potassium. Their color can vary from yellow to brown. Despite people discarding this part of the corn, this elote herb makes a savory tea due to it having the same compounds found in Thyme and mint. It can be found in dried, whole or powder forms.
Ancient peoples like the Aztecs, Incas, Mayans and American Indians used all parts of the corn. Even though it was their staple food source, these cultures also used the corn for medicinal purposes. They made cornmeal (dried kernels) as a compress to be applied on bruises, and inflammations like sores and swellings. To help new mothers with their supply of breast milk and treat dysentery, Aztecs created a cornmeal extract. Barba de Elote or Corn silk when used as a tea helps reduces irritation in the urinary tract; it is also considered anantiseptic that eliminates toxins in the kidneys and bladder.

- The effects of diuretics like Furosemide (Lasix) can be increased by Corn silk or Elote Herb. Avoid drinking Corn Silk tea if you are allergic to Lasix.
- Boil 2 teaspoons of corn silk with 2 cups of water. Bring to a boil, then let simmer for 10 minutes. Then turn of the heat, and let it soak for half an hour. Strain and either warm or drink your tea at room temperature.
- Corn Silk is a soothing diuretic used for Bedwetting, kidney stones, inflammation of the prostate or any irritation of the urinary system.
- Do not use during pregnancy, if you have diabetes, high blood pressure, low potassium levels or are allergic to corn.
- Store dried corn silk in a bag or jar, it will last about a year.

La barba de elote Marca El Guapo son hilos, largos, brillantes y sedosos o estigmas a largados que estan en la parte superior de una mazorca de maiz. Aunque no es considerada como alimento, la barba de Elote es usada como medicina porque contienen significantes cantidades de potasio. Seda de Maiz, Elote Indio, Maydis Estigma, Zea mays y Maidis Estigma son algunos de los nombres con los que la barba de elote es conocida. Su color puede variar de amarillo a café. A pesar de que la gente tira esta parte del elote, esta hierba del elote hace un sabroso te debido a que tiene componentes de tomillo y menta. Lo encuentras en sus diferentes formas seco, entero o en polvo.
Los Antiguos Aztecas, Indios Americanos, Incas y Mayasusaban todas las partes del elote. Aunque de que el maiz era su principal fuente alimenticia, estas culturas tambien usaban el maiz para fines medicinales. Hicieron harina de maiz (granos secos) como una compresa para aplicar sobre heridas e inflamaciones como llagas e hinchazones. Para ayudar a las madres primerizas con su suministro de leche materna y para tratar la disenteria los Aztecas crearon un extracto de harina de maiz.

- Pon a hervir 2 cucharaditas de barba de elote en 2 tazas de agua y deja remojar por media hora. Cuela ycalienta o toma tu te a temperatura ambiente.
- La barba de elote es un diuretico relajante usado para la enuresis nocturna (los ninos que se hacen en la cama), piedras en los rinones, inflamacion de la prostata o cualquier irritacion del sistema urinario.
- El Te de Barba de Choclo o te de Barba de Elote de maiz, es diur‚tico y sirve para el higado. El te de cabellos de ma¡z sirve contra las enfermedades de los rinones, vejiga, calculos biliares y renales, gota, ciatica y nefritis.
- No usar durante el embarazo, si tienes diabetes, alta presion sanguinea, bajos niveles de potasio o eres alergico al maiz.
- Almacena la barba de elote en una bolsa o frasco, tendra una duracion de un ano.
