The history of the miraculous Image of Our Lady of Guadalupe has its beginnings on the 9th of December, 1531. It was Saturday and Juan Diego, a native recently converted to Catholicism, had begun the long walk to attend his religious instruction class. As he neared the hill of Tepeyac, in the valley of Mexico City, he heard the exquisite singing of many birds. Where am I? He wondered. Am I in the land of heaven? Suddenly, he heard a gentle, sweet voice calling his name. Puzzled, he looked around and there stood a lady, beautiful beyond imagination, her robes shining like the sun, the rock upon which she stood projected bright rays of light, the earth around her radiated the colors of the rainbow, the weeds and cactus were like emeralds and turquoise, the thorns like gold. In awe, he fell to his knees. “My son,” She said, “I want you to go to the Bishop and tell him to build me a sacred house here, so that I can console and help all those who seek me, and give them all my love.”

Realizing that this was a request from a Heavenly Lady, he hurried off to see the Bishop. When he told him what happened, the Bishop rebuked him, “Juan Diego, this is only your imagination”, and he sent him away. Troubled and sad, Juan Diego returned to tell the Heavenly Lady that the bishop would not listen to a poor, humble Indian like himself, that instead She should send a nobleman, so that then the Bishop would believe the message. “I have chosen you, Juan Diego, to be my messenger. Go; do as I ask of you.” The next day Juan Diego left before dawn to attend mass, and then to see the Bishop. This time, the Bishop told Juan Diego that he must bring a sign from the Heavenly Lady, or not to come back again. Juan Diego did not return to see her the next day, as his uncle, with whom he lived, was gravely ill. That same evening, the uncle, knowing his end was near, asked for a priest.
Early on Tuesday, December 12th, Juan Diego set out to summon the priest. Fearing that the Lady would detain him, he took a different route, but as he came to the foot of Tepeyac hill, She stopped him. “Where are you going?” She asked the distressed Juan Diego. He told Her about his uncle’s illness. “Do not concern yourself; your uncle is now well.” Our Lady of Guadalupe’s first of many miracles! “Now, go to the top of the hill and gather flowers.” There are never flowers there, only rocks, he thought to himself. To his amazement, he found the hill carpeted with flowers, which he then gathered and placed in the tilma*. “This is the sign that you shall take to the Bishop, so that he will believe My words to you.”

After much waiting, the Bishop received him. When Juan Diego unfolded his tilma, a cascade of fragrant flowers fell to the floor before the astonished Bishop, and on the tilma appeared imprinted the Image of the Heavenly Lady, just as Juan Diego had seen Her on the Hill.

The sacred Image of Our Lady of Guadalupe is the only physical manifestation the holy Virgin has ever given to the world. To this day, Her image remains in her sacred house at the foot of Tepeyac, where each day She is visited and revered by thousands of Her children.

Juan Diego was given the custody of Her Basilica, where he remained until his death. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II on May 6, 1990, and canonized July 31, 2002. His feast is to be celebrated on December 9th.

Over the centuries, Her image has been studied by painters, doctors and scientists from many countries, all unanimously agreeing that it was “painted by brushes not of this world.” With the canonization of Juan Diego, the Church has confirmed this miracle.
Pope John Paul II declared that “the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Mother and Evangelizer of America, be celebrated throughout the American continent on December 12th.”

La historia de la milagrosa aparición de la imagen de la Virgen de Guadalupe tiene su comienzo una mañana del 9 de Diciembre de 1531. Era sábado y Juan Diego, un nativo recién convertido a la Fe, hacía su larga caminata para asistir a la doctrina cristiana. Cuando llegó al pie del cerro llamado Tepeyac, en el Valle de la Cuidad de México, escucho el bello canto de muchos pájaros y se preguntó dónde estoy? Acaso en la tierra celestial?, se preguntó. De pronto, oyó una dulcísimo voz que lo llamaba. Volteó y vio a la Señora más bella que jamás hubiera imaginado. Su vestido relucía como el sol; el risco donde estaba de pie, lanzaba rayos de luz, la tierra relumbraba los colores del arco iris, los mezquites y nopales parecían de esmeraldas y turquesas, las espinas de oro. Asombrado, se postró ante Ella. “Hijito mió,” le dijo “quiero que vayas con el Obispo y le dirás que mucho deseo que aquí me provea de una casa sagrada para que a los que allí me busquen, les daré mi consuelo, mi ayuda y todo mi amor. Anda, haz lo que esté de tu parte”.



Enseguida se dirigió a ver al Obispo. Cuando le contó lo ocurrido, el Obispo, con menosprecio, le dijo, “Juan Diego, son cosas de tu imaginación”, y lo despachó. Muy triste, Juan Diego regreso a decirle a la Señora del Cielo que el Obispo no hacia caso de un pobre indio como él, que mejor debía mandar a un noble para que se creyeran Sus palabras. “Te he escogido a ti, Juan Diego, para que seas mi mensajero. Haz lo que te pido.”



Al día siguiente, antes del amanecer, salio Juan Diego a oír misa y luego para ver al Obispo. Esta vez, el Obispo le dijo que le trajera alguna señal de la Señora del Cielo, o que ya no volviera si no tenía pruebas. Juan Diego no regresó a ver la Señora al día siguiente porque su tío, con quien vivía, estaba gravemente enfermo. Esa noche, el tío, sabiendo que ya se moría, pidió que le trajera un sacerdote.



Muy temprano el martes, 12 de diciembre, Juan Diego salio a buscar al sacerdote. Tomo otra ruta para no encontrarse con la Señora por temor a que lo detuviera. Pero llegando al pie del Tepeyac, Ella lo paró. “ A dónde vas, hijo mió?” le preguntó al apenado Juan Diego. Él le contó lo que pasaba con su tío. “No te aflijas, que tu tío ya esta bien”. Este fue el primero de sus muchos milagros.



Ella le pidió: “Sube ahora a la cumbre del cerro y corta flores.” Allí jamás hay flores, nada mas piedras, pensó él. Pero para su asombro, el cerro estaba alfombrado de flores. Las recogió en su tilma*, y se las llevó a la Señora. “Ésta es la señal que llevarás al Obispo”, le dijo Ella. Después de una larga espera, el Obispo lo recibió y cuando Juan Diego le abrió su tilma, cayó una cascada de fragantes flores a los pies del asombrado Obispo, y en la tilma apareció grabada la imagen de la señora del Cielo, tal como Juan Diego la había visto en el cerro.



Ésta Sagrada Imagen es la única representación de Su físico que la Santísima Virgen ha dado al mundo. Hasta hoy día, la Imagen de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe sigue estando en Su casa sagrada al pie del Tepeyac, donde todos los días cientos de miles de fieles la visitan y la veneran.



Juan Diego fue encargado de ésta Casa Sagrada hasta su muerte. Fue beatificado por el Papa Juan Pablo II el 6 de mayo, 1990, y lo canonizó el 31 de julio, 2002. El santo de San Juan Diego se celebra los días 9 de diciembre.



A través de los siglos, pintores, doctores y científicos han estudiado la Sagrada Imagen, y todos han concluido, “Que fue pintada por pinceles que no son de éste mundo”. Con la canonización de Juan Diego, la iglesia confirma este milagro.



Juan Pablo II pidió que “la Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe sea el centro de donde la luz del Evangelio de Cristo iluminará al mundo entero por medio de la Imagen milagrosa de su Madre”. Y declaró “que el día 12 de diciembre se celebre en todo el Continente Americano la fiesta de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, Madre y Evangelizadora de América.”
